The eLandfill mobile app is for work out on site. With it you can:
- scan an asset's QR tag and see its details
- record observations, with photos and a location
- walk gas and water rounds
- check the weather
It is made to keep working where there is no coverage. What you record is kept on the phone and sent to eLandfill automatically when a connection comes back.
The app is available for Android. It works with the same account, sites and data as the eLandfill website.
A note on words: the app calls a set of observations recorded together a group. On the website this is an inspection.

- Troubleshooting
- Enter your Email and Password. Tap Show to see the password as you type it.
- Tick Keep me signed in if you want the app to stay signed in. It lasts 7 days at a time, and each time you open the app the 7 days start again.
- Tap Sign in.
Your account may have access to more than one eLandfill environment, for example the cloud and CIT. In that case the app asks which one to connect to.
Forgot your password? Type your email first, then tap Forgot your password? and confirm Send link. The app emails you a reset link.
Fingerprint or face sign-in. The first time you sign in with Keep me signed in ticked, the app offers to use your phone's fingerprint or face unlock next time. Your password keeps working either way. You can turn this on or off later under More.
Opening the app with no coverage. If you stayed signed in, the app opens on the data already on the phone, instead of asking you to sign in.
Everything the app shows belongs to one site at a time: assets, the map, groups, rounds.
After your first sign-in, pick your site from the list. To change it later, go to More and tap Site.
When you choose a site with a connection, the app downloads all of that site's assets to the phone straight away. You can then find them later even without coverage. See Assets on this phone.
The tab bar at the bottom has six tabs:
| Tab |
What it opens |
| Home |
Today's overview of the site |
| Map |
The site map, layers and drone imagery |
| Scan |
The QR tag scanner |
| Inspect |
Groups, observations and the asset list |
| Readings |
The gas round or the water round |
| More |
Weather, site, language, account and sign out |
Each tab remembers where you were, so you can switch tabs and come back to the same screen.
Home opens with the site name at the top.
Under the header, one line tells you how up to date the phone is:
- Synced just now / Synced 2 h ago: when the phone last heard from eLandfill.
- Not synced yet: the phone has not reached eLandfill since you signed in.
- On the same line, anything still waiting on the phone: Syncing…, 2 groups queued, 3 readings queued, 5 waiting to send or 1 not accepted.
The line turns amber if something has been waiting for more than a day.
The same line appears on the Assets, Groups, Observations and round screens.
- Scan asset: opens the scanner.
- Assets: opens the asset list, with the number of assets on the site.
This card tells you how many of the site's assets are saved on the phone and how old that copy is, for example 412 assets · 2 h ago.
Tap Synchronize to download every asset on the site again, with all its details. Do this before heading out to a part of the site with poor coverage.
- The button only works when the phone has a connection. Without one it is grey, and the card says Needs a connection.
- If the download fails, the card says The download did not finish. Try again with a better signal. The previous copy stays on the phone.
- The app also refreshes a lighter copy by itself whenever Home opens with a connection. It does a full download automatically when you choose a site.
This list shows open observations that someone has given a priority, the most urgent first. It only appears when there are some. Tap a row to open the observation, or tap the link underneath to see them all.
The newest groups and observations on the site. A group you saved that is still on the phone appears first, marked On this phone.
Tiles with the site at a glance. Each one opens the full picture:
- Urgent: open observations graded urgent.
- Assets on site: the number of assets.
- Last group: how long since the last group was recorded.
- Wind and Rain: the forecast for the site.
A tile that could not be loaded shows —, never a misleading 0.
Pull Home down to refresh everything.
Open the Scan tab, or tap Scan asset on Home. The camera starts by itself. The first time, the app asks for permission to use the camera.
- Point the camera at the asset's QR tag. The scanner reads QR codes only.
- When the tag is recognised, the phone buzzes and the asset's screen opens.
Other options on the scan screen
- Light turns on the phone's torch, for dark corners and night work.
- Enter code manually lets you type the code from the tag: the asset's ID, or its older number (legacy ID). Then tap Open. This is useful for a damaged tag.
- Last scan reopens the asset you scanned last.
- Nearby opens the asset list sorted by distance.
If the code does not belong to the current site, the app shows Unknown tag. Check you are on the right site under More.
Scanning also works without coverage, as long as the site's assets are on the phone.
Open the Inspect tab and choose Assets, or tap Assets on Home.
- Search assets finds assets by name or type.
- The chips under the search (All, then one per asset type) narrow the list. Tap a chip again to clear it.
- With location turned on, the list is sorted Nearest first and shows each asset's distance. Otherwise it is sorted A–Z. Tap Enable location to allow it.
Each card shows:
- the asset's name, type and status: green when in operation, amber under maintenance or construction, red when decommissioned
- the most urgent open observation on it
- when it was last checked (its most recent observation), or never checked
- Locate, which opens the map centred on the asset
Tap an asset in the list, scan its tag, or tap Details on the map.
The screen shows:
- A small map of where the asset is. Tap it to open the full map there.
- Type, group, status and when it was created.
- Location: coordinates, elevation, and its length or area if it has one.
- Information: the fields set up for this type of asset.
- Substances & materials.
- Latest readings: the newest value of each measurement. A value outside the site's limits is marked out of range and listed first.
- History: the last observations recorded against the asset. Tap one to open it.
Actions
- Add observation opens the observation form with this asset already filled in.
- Take photo adds a photo to the asset, from the camera or the photo library, with a Title (required) and an optional Description. This needs a connection.
- Locate opens the map centred on the asset.
- The … menu has Save QR code (download the asset's tag as an image), Copy asset ID and Refresh.
The Map tab shows the site full screen.
- Find asset or cell searches assets by name. Pick one to zoom to it.
- The buttons on the right zoom in and out, centre the map on you (Locate), open Layers, and Fit the map to what is shown.
- The bar at the bottom shows the scale, your GPS accuracy and which imagery is on.
Tap an asset to open a small sheet with its status, distance, last check and group. From there:
- Details opens the asset screen.
- Centre centres the map on the asset.
- Route opens directions in Google Maps.
Layers
- Imagery: drone surveys grouped by year, and satellite.
- Site layers: tap a layer to show or hide it. Tap Aa to turn its labels on or off. All on and All off switch everything at once.
The app remembers your choices for each site.
Substances
The Substances panel colours assets by their main substance (landfill gas, leachate and so on), using the same colours as the website. Turn off Colour by primary substance to draw assets in their layer's own colour.
¶ Groups and observations
Open the Inspect tab. The switch at the top moves between Groups, Observations and Assets.
- On the Observations list, tap +. Or, on an asset's screen, tap Add observation.
- Fill in the form:
- Title (optional): a short name, for example "Torn liner, east slope".
- What did you see?: the description. This is the only required field.
- Priority (optional): Urgent, Moderate or Not urgent.
- Type: Maintenance, Emissions, Safety or General (the default).
- Asset (optional): start typing to search the site's assets. This works without coverage too.
- Photos: Take a photo with the camera, or pick From the gallery. Each photo must be under 10 MB.
- Where (optional): tap Use my location.
- Tap Save observation.
Tap a selected chip again to clear it.
Where the location comes from. If you don't tap Use my location, the observation can still get a location from your photos:
- a photo taken with the camera gives the phone's position at the moment it was taken
- a photo from the gallery gives the position stored in the picture, if it has one
A group is several observations recorded together, for example one walk round the site.
- On the Groups list, tap +.
- Check the date under Recorded on, and add Notes if you like.
- Tap Add observation for each thing you see. Fill in the form, then tap Add to the group.
- Tap Save group when you are done.
The group is saved on the phone as you go. If the app is closed halfway, opening New group again brings back what you had.
¶ Viewing and editing
- Groups list: groups still on the phone appear first, with their state. Tap a group to see its notes, observations, photos and comments.
- On a group:
- Add observation adds to it.
- Report saves a PDF report to the phone's Documents folder.
- Comments lets you comment on one of its observations. Comments need a connection.
- Observations list:
- search by note, asset or author
- filter by priority (Urgent, Moderate, Not urgent, Ungraded)
- by default only open observations are shown; tap Show resolved too to include the rest
- On an observation: tap the pencil to edit it. You can change the text, priority, type, asset and location, and add or remove photos.
- Photos open full screen, where you can Download or Share them.
¶ Gas and water rounds
The Readings tab opens the round you used last on this site. Use the Gas | Water switch at the top to change. The switch only shows on the gas round when the site has water points.
The gas round lists the site's gas points, grouped by line. A gas point is an asset in operation whose main substance is a gas, such as landfill gas or methane.
Before you start
- Analyser: choose the device you are measuring with. The choice is kept for this site on this phone.
- Measured: how often the site is measured, Daily, Weekly or Monthly. This decides what counts as done.
The list
- The bar at the top shows your progress, for example 12 of 40 read today.
- Lines open when you tap them, and each shows how many of its points are done.
- Use the search, or the Not read chip, to find what is left.
- Each point shows its state: not read today, read today, typed, not saved, waiting to send or not accepted.
Taking a reading
- Tap a point.
- Enter the values. The fields are the ones the site records; if the site has none set up, you get the usual four: balance, CH₄, O₂ and CO₂.
- The last value is shown beside each field.
- A value outside the site's expected range turns amber. This is only a warning; you can still save.
- More fields shows the other values your analyser can give.
- Add a Note if needed. Taken at is filled in with the current time and your position.
- Tap Save and next. The reading is queued and the next unread point on the line opens.
What you type is kept on the phone as you go. If you leave a point half done, the round offers Carry on with … to take you back.
If someone else recorded the same point at the same time, the app shows both readings. You choose Replace it with mine, Keep both or Keep theirs.
The water round works the same way for water points, such as leachate wells. A water point is an asset whose main substance is water, or any point that already has a water sample.
- Sampled sets how often the site is sampled (monthly by default).
- On a point, enter the site's parameters. If the site has none set up, you get the usual field readings: water height, acidity, conductivity, temperature, ORP and flow.
- Find a parameter searches every other parameter, grouped under Elements, Organic compounds, Inorganic compounds, Microbiological, PFAS and General.
- Tap < next to a value for a result below the detection limit.
- Sample details holds the laboratory, sampler, analyst and analysis date.
To take a first water sample at a point that is not a water point yet, search for it. It appears under Other points on this site.
Open it from More > Weather, or tap the Wind or Rain tile on Home.
- Right now: temperature, wind and gusts, rain, humidity and pressure. These are modelled for the site's location, not measured on it.
- Next hours: the next 12 hours of temperature, rain and wind.
- Site stations: the latest values from the site's own weather stations, if it has any.
The weather needs a connection.
¶ More: settings and signing out
- Weather: forecast and stations.
- Site: shows the current site; tap to change it.
- Language: English, Français, Svenska, Íslenska, Español or Português (BR). The choice is saved on your account, so the website uses it too. Text not yet translated into your language appears in English.
- Your account: your name, email, organisation, the server you are connected to, and the app version.
- Sign in with fingerprint / face unlock: turn biometric sign-in on or off. This only appears if your phone supports it and you stayed signed in.
- Sign out: anything still waiting to send stays on the phone until you sign in again.
The app is built for parts of the site with no signal.
- Record observations and groups, with photos.
- Take gas readings and water samples.
- Scan tags, search assets, and link an observation to an asset.
- Look at the asset list, asset screens, groups, observations and the rounds as they were when last loaded.
- Comments
- Asset photos (Take photo on the asset screen)
- PDF reports
- Weather
- Downloading the site's assets (Synchronize)
Everything you save goes to the phone first, then to eLandfill. You don't need to do anything: the app sends it as soon as it can. That is when:
- the connection comes back
- you open the app or bring it back to the screen
- you save something new
While something is waiting, it is marked:
| Mark |
Meaning |
| Draft |
Still being written (a group you have not saved yet) |
| Waiting to sync / waiting to send |
Saved on the phone, will be sent when possible |
| Syncing… |
Being sent now |
| Not accepted |
eLandfill refused it; the reason is shown. Correct it and save again, or tap Try again or Discard |
The sync line on Home shows how many items are waiting.
- Open the app with a connection and check you are on the right site.
- On Home, tap Synchronize so every asset is on the phone.
- Open the Readings tab once, so the round is on the phone too.
When you are back in coverage, open the app and check that the sync line has nothing waiting.
The scanner says "Unknown tag".
The tag belongs to another site, or the asset was added after the phone last synchronized. Check the site under More, then tap Synchronize on Home when you have a connection.
I cannot find an asset when offline.
The phone only knows the assets it has downloaded. On Home, check the Assets on this phone card, and tap Synchronize next time you have a connection.
Something is marked "Not accepted".
eLandfill refused it, and the reason is shown on the item. Open it, correct it and save again, or discard it.
The sync line is amber.
Something has been waiting to send for more than a day. Open the app somewhere with a good connection and keep it on screen for a moment.
The camera or location does not work.
The app was refused permission. Allow camera and location for eLandfill in the phone's settings. The scanner offers Open camera settings.
The map does not show where I am.
Tap Enable on the banner, or Locate, and allow location.
